I am committed to developing my will
without forcing myself. There must be a way.
To quote Ferrucci (What We May Be p.77)
“I want to live without trying so hard, without
the constant imposition of controls.”

Is there something that is already a part of
my experience that can help me with this?
Were there times when I did things of my own
free will? Times when I chose things without
being afraid or immobilized?

I always loved artistic projects. I could accept that the process wouldn’t be smooth, that snags would come, and eventually solutions would come. In fact, overcoming a snag was often the catalyst that brought about an elegant solution.

Once when I was in grade school the class was dressing clothespin dolls in crepe paper. I cut a piece of crepe paper and wound it around the doll. The skirt was too short. We had been warned not to waste materials, so I thought it would not be OK to cut another piece and start over. I was stuck with a skirt that didn’t look right. Then I noticed there were narrow strips of crepe paper left over, in different colors. I put a ruffle at the bottom of my doll’s skirt. It looked much nicer than just a plain skirt – I had turned a mistake into an advantage!

That’s one area where I could make choices and move toward an outcome I was pleased with.
